Introduction to
Faithbooking
by Sara Westhead
Why do we scrapbook?
Ultimately, it's to share our past with our future - a way of
showing our children and our grandchildren what life was like
‘way back when. ‘
We tend to include all kinds
of important things in our albums - births and birthdays,
weddings and holidays - all the big events in our lives. Many
also like to capture brief glimpses of every day life with a
simple photo of their child gazing through a window and
journaling that reflects the thoughts and feelings of the
moment. Even ‘Books About Me' are gaining in
popularity.
However, what we often tend to
forget those moments that have deeper spiritual
meaning.
Psalms 78:4 tells us, "We will tell the next
generation of the praiseworthy deeds of the
Lord."
Time and again in the Old
Testament, God commanded the Israelites to create monuments
that would remind their children and their children's children
of the goodness of God.
One such example is in Joshua
4:
"Now when all the nation had finished
crossing the Jordan the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying, ‘Take for
yourselves twelve men from the people, one man from each tribe,
and command them saying, "Take up for yourselves twelve stones
from here out of the middle of the Jordan, from the place where
the priests' feet are standing firm, and carry them over with
you and lay them down in the lodging place where you will lodge
tonight".' So Joshua called the twelve men whom he had
appointed from the sons of Israel, one man from each tribe; and
Joshua said to them, ‘Cross again to the ark of the Lord your
God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you take up a
stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of
the sons of Israel. Let this be a sign among you, so that when
your children ask later, saying, "What do these stones mean to
you?" then you shall say to them, "Because the waters of the
Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord;
when it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut
off." So these stones shall become a memorial to the sons of
Israel forever'." (Joshua 4:1-7)
Our scrapbooks are memorials,
just like these stone monuments were. Moses reminded of this in
Deuteronomy.
Deuteronomy 4:9-10 - Only be careful, and
watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things
your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as
you live. Teach them to your children and their children after
them. Remember the day you stood before the Lord your God at
Horeb, when he said to me, ‘Assemble the people before me to
hear my words so that they may learn to revere me as long as
they live in the land and may teach them to their
children.'
Likewise, Deuteronomy 11:18-21
reads:
"Fix these words of mine in your hearts and
minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your
foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when
you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie
down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your
houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of
your children may be many in the land that the Lord swore to
give your forefathers, as many as the days that the heavens are
above the earth."
The question then remains, how
do you incorporate your faith into your scrapbooking? Really,
the ideas are limitless...
